FLORENCE, SC – Senior Lezlie Logan pounded out 11 kills and freshman Krissy Mordini added 10 as Francis Marion University swept to an easy 30-27, 30-11, 30-8 non-conference win over Newberry College, Tuesday night (Oct. 3) in women’s volleyball action.
Francis Marion improves to 17-5 and has won eight of its last matches. Newberry sinks to 2-17 with its 12th consecutive defeat.
FMU sophomore setter Jenna Kaiser registered 33 assists, while junior Jackie Phiel had five kills, four service aces, and a team-high 14 digs.
Freshman Lorena Maia paced the Lady Indians with seven kills and two service aces, while setter Kilee Ruppe handed out 14 assists.
Newberry came out and surprised the Patriots by taking an 18-8 lead in game one, and at one time leading 19-10. Francis Marion quickly rallied to grab a 24-21 advantage, and after Newberry pulled to within 28-27, the Patriots scored the final two points of the game. FMU never trailed in games two and three. Phiel served the final seven points of game two.
The eight points surrendered in game three were the fewest allowed by the Patriots in a 30-point game since the 2004 Peach Belt Conference Tournament when FMU beat Lander University 30-7.
FMU travels to USC Aiken on Friday for a 7 p.m. PBC match, while Newberry plays at Catawba College, also on Friday at 7 p.m.
