FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Shane Burroughs scored on an acrobatic second-half shot to give Queens University of Charlotte a 1-0 non-conference victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday (Oct. 4) afternoon in men’s soccer action.
The Royals move to 7-4, while Francis Marion drops to 3-7-1 following its fourth straight shutout loss. The scoring drought is the longest for the Patriots since 1994.
Burroughs’ goal came at the 57:06 mark. Matt Herbstritt served the ball from near midfield and the ball glanced off the head of FMU defender Matt Gourie to Burroughs, who scored on a near-bicycle kick shot from seven yards in front of the goal.
The Royals nearly doubled their margin in the 70th minute when a shot by Herbstritt was blocked by Patriot goalkeeper Nick Krywyj. The ball rebounded back to Herbstritt who then headed the ball toward the open goal. However, FMU freshman defender Donald Schick raced near the goal line and cleared the ball out.
FMU had an opportunity to knot the score at 1-1 in the 76th minute, but again a defender aided his goalkeeper. When Queens’ keeper Dan Williams came out of the goal to contest a serve, FMU freshman Jared Beauchamp had a shot at the open goal, but a Queens’ defender got to the ball before it crossed the goal line.
Williams, who recorded no saves in the second half, and Brian Luksis, who made one stop in the opening 45 minutes, combined for the shutout. Krywyj registered four saves as Queens out shot Francis Marion 9-5. Both squads took six corner kicks.
FMU will play host to sixth-ranked USC Upstate, Saturday at 2 p.m., while Queens plays at Erskine College, Saturday at 3 p.m.
