FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Kirby Stenard registered four goals and one assist as Francis Marion University rolled to a 7-0 win over South Carolina State University, Friday afternoon (Oct. 13) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion climbs above .500 at 6-5-3, while the Lady Bulldogs (2-10-0) suffer their eighth consecutive shutout loss.
Stenard’s four goals equal the third highest total in team history. Combined with one first-half assist, her nine points represents the fifth highest single-match performance ever for the Patriots.
She scored her first goal on an 8-yard shot following a pass from Ashley Fortune only 3:19 into the match. Fortune tallied the first of two goals on an assist from freshman Angela Salem at 10:35 to put FMU up 2-0. Fortune scored again six minutes later on a 10-yard shot from the left side, utilizing an assist from Stenard. FMU led 3-0 at intermission.
At 52:05, Stenard opened the second-half scoring on a 6-yard shot from in front of the goal. Brandi Sutphin assisted on that goal. Fortune then fed Stenard for a 9-yard shot from the left side at the 70:57 mark that gave the Patriots a 5-0 advantage.
Stenard recorded FMU’s sixth goal on a well-executed give-and-go with Salem at 81:01. Salem then concluded the scoring with a 3-yard shot after a chip pass from Kiersten Nedervelt.
Fortune’s two scores up her season total to six, while Stenard paces the squad with 10 goals. Salem now leads the squad with eight assists, only three shy of the team single-season record.
FMU junior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin and freshman keeper Emily Brandenburg combined for the shutout. Sutphin had two saves in the opening half and Brandenburg made four stops in the final 45 minutes. Senior South Carolina State keeper Ciji Sims recorded 10 saves as FMU out shot the Bulldogs 30-6 and led 7-2 in corner kicks.
FMU will play at High Point University, Sunday at 2 p.m., while S.C. State hosts USC Salkahatchie on Monday at 7 p.m.
