CLINTON, SC - The Francis Marion University women's volleyball team won two of three matches at this weekend's Blue Hose Invitational Tournament in Clinton, S.C., Oct. 13-14.
On Saturday, Francis Marion dropped a 30-22, 30-18, 30-19 decision to 10th-ranked Florida Gulf Coast University. The Patriots (21-7) played well against the Top 10 opponent, and trailed only 19-18 in game three, before FGCU scored 11 of the final 12 points.
Florida Gulf Coast by holding Francis Marion in check. Once again, FGCU utilized a balanced attack to key its win as the Eagles hit .403 for the match, committing only nine errors in 119 attempts.
The junior duo of Heather Van Olst and Brooke Youngquist combined for 28 of FGCU’s 57 kills with 14 apiece. Sophomore Cara Ziegler also notched double-digit kills with 10, while Van Olst and Ericka Fonseca teamed up for six of the team’s eight service aces with three each.
Only senior Lezlie Logan totaled double-figure kills for the Patriots with a game-high 15, while Jackie Phiel and Jessica Strader garnered 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Logan did however reach a career milestone, by moving into second place on the Peach Belt Conference's career list for kills with 1,790. She is 116 shy of the all-time record.
On Friday, FMU took a pair of 3-0 decisions: 34-32, 30-19, 30-23 over Catawba College and 30-22, 30-18, 30-23 over North Carolina Central University. The victories gave Francis Marion 21 wins, the third consecutive 20-win season for the Patriots and the 15th in team history.
FMU will host three Peach Belt Conference matches this week: Wednesday at 7 p.m. against UNC Pembroke, Friday at 7 p.m. against USC Upstate, and Saturday at 3 p.m. against Lander University.
