SMITHS STATION, AL --- The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s cross country squads placed fifth and seventh respectively at the 2006 Peach Belt Conference championship meet, held Saturday morning (Oct. 21). Two FMU women earned All-Conference honors and junior Codi Knoch nearly set a school record.
Host Columbus State University won both the men’s and women’s team titles.
In the men’s race, CSU runners occupied the top three places and four of the top 10. Columbus State finished with 27 points, followed by Georgia College & State University (43), North Georgia College & State University (85), UNC Pembroke (106), Francis Marion (111), and Clayton State University (131).
Senior Patrick Hopewell led the Francis Marion men with a 17th-place showing, as he toured the 8,000-meter course in 28:26. Sophomore Dan Brann was 18th (28:43), while sophomore Steven Holmes was 21st (29:11), freshman Jacob Williams was 27th (career-best 29:51), freshman John Corley was 28th (29:56), junior Ariel Ortiz was 33rd (32:16), and junior T.J. Simmons was 36th (career-best 35:20).
In the women’s race, CSU edged Clayton State by only two points, 56-58. Augusta State University (82) finished third, followed by UNCP (89), GC&SU (126), North Georgia (157), FMU (167), Lander University (173), USC Aiken (198), and Georgia Southwestern State University (276).
Knoch finished in seventh position and earned All-PBC honors while posting a career-best time of 19:20, the second-best time in school history (10 seconds off the record). Patriot sophomore Kelly May placed 13th, also earning All-Conference honors, as completed the 5,000-meter course in a career-best time of 19:42. Her time bettered her old mark by 0.64 of a second set in the team’s final regular-season race.
Other FMU finishers included senior Megan Coy in 43rd place (21:10), freshman Amanda Doyle in 50th (21:39), freshman Kim Richardson in 57th (22:33), freshman Holly Todd in 63rd (career-best 23:28), and senior Sara Parry in 69th (26:53).
Both Francis Marion squads will compete in the NCAA Division II South Regional Meet, Nov. 4 in Memphis, Tenn.
