NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Junior Rodrick Burton scored a career-high 19 points and senior Raymond Dorsey added 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead Francis Marion University past the Apprentice School 66-57, Wednesday night (Nov. 22) in non-conference men’s basketball action.
Francis Marion improves to 2-1, and the Patriots now return home to play Morris College on November 28 at 7:30 p.m.
The Builders fell behind 7-0 early and scored their first points on a pair of Fred Spratley free throws with 16:12 left. Francis Marion kept the lead around five points until the Builders took their first lead of the night at 15-13 on a pair of Thomas Crawford free throws with 6:23 left. FMU responded with an 11-1 run to take a 24-16 lead on a Nate Morley stick back with 2:41 left. That was the working margin for the Patriots the remainder of the half, as FMU held a 29-21 lead at intermission.
Francis Marion carried the momentum into the second half, starting on a 9-2 run for a 38-23 advantage on a Kevin Ashford jumper with 16:15 left. The Builders made a few spurts quickly answered by the Patriots, who continued to hold a 55-43 lead with 6:38 left on a 3-pointer from Morley.
Apprentice School made one last charge cutting the lead to 55-51 with 4:30 left on a Spratley jumper. The visitors kept the Builders at arms length from there for the hard-fought win.
Nolan Thompson scored 13 points, hitting some key 3-pointers in the second half to lead the Builders (0-2) charge. Crawford had 11 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the year also for Apprentice.
