Balanced Attack guides Patriot Women past Flying Fleet

DUE WEST, SC – Junior guard Brittany Young’s 14 points led four Francis Marion University scorers in double figures as the Patriots knocked off Erskine College 74-57, Tuesday evening (Nov. 28) in non-conference women’s basketball action at the Galloway Center.

Francis Marion evens its record at 3-3, while Erskine is winless in two starts.

Freshman forward Yasmean Dixon came off the FMU bench to score 10 points, her first double-digit effort as a collegian, while juniors Renee Guilliams and Vanessa Goff also tallied 10 points each. Dixon hauled down a team-high seven rebounds.

The Fleet was victimized by 18 turnovers and hot Francis Marion shooting (57.1%) in the opening half. The Patriots closed the stanza with a 28-13 run to take a commanding 43-27 halftime advantage.

In the second half, FMU led by as many as 24 points (61-37) following a basket by Dixon with 9:07 remaining. However, the Fleet responded with a 20-7 run to cut the lead to 11 at 68-57 on a Lisa Jackson layup with 2:11 left in the contest. That would be as close as Erskine would get as Goff, Young, and Kirby Marsh combined to score the game’s final six points.

The Fleet was led by Jackson, a senior guard and CVAC Player of the Year candidate, who had 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 shooting from the charity stripe. Kristy Vaughn added 17 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard Audrey Timmerman poured in 13 points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field.

Francis Marion plays host to 23rd-ranked Clayton State University in a non-conference match-up, Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Patriots’ final home game before the New Year.
