Dorsey and Burton score 15 each in FMU defeat at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Junior guard Cory Etheridge poured in a career-high 26 points to lead Newberry College to an 84-68 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2) at Eleazer Arena.

Etheridge came off the bench and shot 10-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 shooting from behind the arc, in only 23 minutes to give Newberry (2-4) its second win of the season.

Francis Marion (3-3) drops its second consecutive contest following a three-game winning streak. The Patriots were led in scoring by senior forward Raymond Dorsey and junior swingman Rodrick Burton, who each tallied 15 points. Senior 6-8 center Kevin Ashford grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored six points.

Newberry’s Zach Chandler bounced back from his career-low scoring performance against Kennesaw State University on Tuesday to score 16 points against the Patriots on 5-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The Patriots led for the first two and a half minutes of the game after opening on a Larnelle Peterson three-pointer, but the Indians charged to an 18-9 lead after an Etheridge fast-break layup with 13:28 left in the half.

Francis Marion stayed within reach of the Indians for the majority of the half, but a 6-0 run capped off by a steal and buzzer-beating layup by Matt Alexander gave Newberry a 15-point halftime advantage at 44-29.

The second half was more even in the scoring column, although Newberry was able to extend its lead to as many as 22 points with 4:11 remaining, before FMU went on an 11-5 spurt to close out the game.

The Indians had the hot shooting hand for the entire game, as they shot 31-of-53 (58.5%) from the floor, with 49 points off the bench. In contrast, the Patriots shot only 22-of-55 (40.0%) from the floor and had 19 points from the reserves.

Francis Marion plays host to Mount Olive College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Patriots’ final home game before the holidays.
