Patriot Women fall to unbeaten Newberry 63-42

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Junior forward Tonique Frasier tallied game-high totals of 22 points and nine rebounds to lead unbeaten Newberry College to a 63-42 victory Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 16) in non-conference women’s basketball action.

Newberry’s 10-game winning streak to open its 2006-07 campaign is one victory shy of the school record of 11 straight wins set during the 1987-88 season.  It was only the Lady Indians’ third win in the 24-game series with Francis Marion, although the two programs were meeting for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Junior guard Brittany Young again paced FMU (3-7) with 11 points.  Junior Renee Guilliams added eight points.

After the Patriots took an early 1-0 lead, Newberry scored the next seven points and never trailed again.  Francis Marion kept the game relatively close through most of the first half, tying the score at 12-12 on a Guilliams’ three-pointer and trailing only 23-18 following a pair of Young free throws with 4:42 left in the stanza.  However, Frazier helped ignite a 13-4 Newberry run to close the half and the Lady Indians carried a 36-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the second stanza, Newberry shot 64.7 percent from the floor, while limiting Francis Marion to only 6-of-20 shots.    FMU freshman Yasmean Dixon drained a pair of charity tosses with 13:45 remaining in the contest to draw the Patriots to within 44-33.  Newberry responded with a 9-1 spurt that resulted in a commanding 19-point margin (53-34) with seven minutes left.

Frazier connected on 9-of-17 field goal attempts.  Three other Lady Indians tallied at least eight points. Monica Alexander was just a point and an assist away from a double-double, scoring nine and dishing out nine assists in 28 minutes.

Newberry outrebounded Francis Marion 40-22 and held a 28-8 advantage in points in the paint, while also outscoring FMU in fast break points 21-2.  The Patriots were also hampered by poor free throw shooting (10 of 22).

After a Christmas break, Francis Marion opens Peach Belt Conference play on Jan. 2 by hosting Lander University at 5:30 p.m.
