MORROW, GA. – Awakened by an early 6-0 deficit, second-ranked and undefeated Clayton State University scored 30 of the game’s next 35 points and coasted to a 78-50 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 6) in Peach Belt Conference men’s basketball action.
Senior guard Dominic Bishop was the lone Patriot in double figures with 12 points. Guard Nate Morley added nine points off the FMU bench on a trio of three-pointers.
In the process of suffering their seventh straight defeat, the Patriots (3-8, 0-2) tied a school and national record by not making a free throw. FMU was 0-of-4 at the stripe on Saturday. The only previous time the Patriots did not make a free throw came in a 1972 loss to Erskine College.
Guard Michael Sloan with 16 points led four Lakers (13-0, 2-0) in double figures. He was followed by Brandon Kelley with 12, Todd McLaurin with 11, and senior 7-1 center Aristide Sawadogo with 10 points and nine rebounds.
A pair of layups by Bishop and an inside bucket by Kevin Ashford staked FMU to the early 6-0 lead. However, the Lakers responded by outscoring Francis Marion 30-5 over the next 13 minutes and led 43-18 at intermission.
Clayton State’s largest lead came at 51-20 after a McLaurin layup with 17:38 left.
Francis Marion will travel to Spartanburg to play USC Upstate, Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
