SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Spartanburg made nine three-point field goals and committed only eight turnovers en route to a 65-48 victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Jan. 10) in Peach Belt Conference men’s basketball action.
Senior forward Raymond Dorsey led Francis Marion with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocked shots, his fourth double-double of the season and sixth of his career. FMU falls to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the PBC with its eighth consecutive defeat.
Guard Daniel Quinlan led USC Upstate (10-4, 2-1) with 22 points, while Zac Rich came off the Spartans’ bench to hit five three-pointers and scored a career-high 18 points.
USC Upstate snapped an early 4-4 deadlock with a 5-0 spurt and never trailed. A three-point play by Dorsey brought the Patriots to within 22-20 with 7:23 left in the opening half, but the Spartans answered with a 7-0 run, and led 33-25 at halftime.
The Spartans scored the opening seven points of the second stanza and were never seriously threatened after that point. USC Upstate led by as many as 26 points (62-36) before Francis Marion closed the game with a 12-3 run.
After going 0-of-4 at the free throw line in Saturday’s loss to second-ranked Clayton State University, Francis Marion managed only 2-of-5 charity tosses on Wednesday.
Francis Marion will entertain 20th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University, Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
