MURFREESBORO N.C. – Guard Montino Williams scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Chowan College to a 66-47 non-conference victory over Francis Marion University 66-47, Monday evening (Jan. 15) in men's action.
The Hawks improve to 7-9, while the Patriots suffer their 10th consecutive loss and drop to 3-11. FMU will play host to USC Aiken, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Senior guard Dominic Bishop paced Francis Marion with 13 points, while senior forward Raymond Dorsey added 12 points.
Chowan took the lead at the 16:50 mark of the first period, 10-7 on a Williams’ three-pointer, and never looked back. That basket ignited a 15-0 run that ballooned the margin to 22-7. The Hawks got up by as many as 19 points (30-11), before taking a 36-23 lead into halftime.
Francis Marion would get no closer than 14 points in the second stanza, while Chowan’s largest lead came at 66-40 with 4:29 left.
The Hawks shot 44% from the floor, hitting 23 of 52, including eight three-pointers. Williams netted five of the three-pointers. Chowan won the battle of the boards 42-31 and held a 16-9 advantage in second-chance points.
Chowan's Trayvon Lathan scored 14 points and now needs just 19 total points to become the program's all-time leading scorer. Freshman Lando Morrison scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds and was 5-6 from the floor in the game.
