AMERICUS, GA. – Junior guard Renee Guilliams scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to pace Francis Marion University to a 66-52 road victory over Georgia Southwestern State University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20) in Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball action.
Francis Marion captures is second win-in-a-row to up its records to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the PBC. The Patriots will play host to USC Upstate on Faculty Appreciation Night and Sea of Red Night, Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
In addition to Guilliams, junior point guard Brittany Young tallied 16 points, on 6-of-10 shooting, and handed out seven assists. Sophomore guard Kirby Marsh came off the FMU bench to contribute 11 points in 15 minutes of action.
Forward Brynne Callaway was the lone Georgia Southwestern State player in double figures with 11 points, as the Hurricanes (2-11, 0-6) remain winless in conference play.
FMU took the lead for good at 7-5 on a Young layup six minutes into the contest. The Patriots gradually pulled away to a 35-24 halftime advantage. Francis Marion connected on 45.2 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes, while holding the Hurricanes to only 33.3 percent (10 of 30).
Georgia Southwestern State rallied to within 47-42 following a layup by Angela Lamb with 7:49 left to play. On the ensuing possession, a jumper by Guilliams ignited an 8-0 FMU spurt that widened the margin to 55-42 with 5:05 remaining. The lead would stay in double figures for the rest of the contest.
