AMERICUS, GA. – Adrian Robinson, Norbey Aragon, and Shawn King combined for 51 points to lead Georgia Southwestern State University to a 68-56 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20) in Peach Belt Conference men's action.
Senior forward Raymond Dorsey continued his outstanding play for Francis Marion (4-12, 1-5) with 15 points and three assists. Sophomore Akeene Coakley came off the Patriot bench to also register 15 points and grab five rebounds, while freshman guard Cortne’ Baker chipped in 11 points.
Robinson led the Hurricanes (9-7, 2-4) with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Aragon and King each tallied 14 points. Georgia Southwestern is in its first year as a PBC member.
Robinson also hit all eight of his free throws attempts as the Hurricanes made 25 of 33 charity tosses and held a decisive advantage at the line. FMU managed only 11 of 23 free throws.
Francis Marion led by as many as eight points (on two occasions) in the opening half, but trailed 30-29 at intermission after King made a pair of free throws with one minute left. FMU would never lead again.
The Hurricanes opened the second half with a 13-4 run to lead 43-33 with 14:51 remaining. Twice FMU would pull to within seven points, the last time at 45-38 following a Kevin Ashford layup with 13:18 left, but Georgia Southwestern gradually pulled away for the victory.
Georgia Southwestern attempted only 16 field goals in the final 20 minutes and made nine for 56.3 percent, but the Hurricanes sealed the win with an 18-of-23 showing at the stripe in the final half.
FMU will play host to USC Upstate on Faculty Appreciation Night and Sea of Red Night, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
