FLORENCE, S.C. – Forwards Tyrekus Bowman and Ben Madgen each scored 15 points and Augusta State University used a 25-9 advantage at the free throw line to claim a 79-63 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27) in men's hoop action.
Bowman also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for ASU (16-3, 8-0) as the Jaguars remain the only unbeaten team in PBC play. Freshman guard Daniel Dixon added 14 points, while reserve guard Kip Small scored 11 points and 6-11 center Garret Siler chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.
Senior forward Raymond Dorsey led Francis Marion (5-13, 2-6) with 17 points and six rebounds. Senior 6-8 center Kevin Ashford tallied a career-high 12 points for the Patriots and senior guard Dominic Bishop added 11 points and five assists.
Augusta State connected on 25 of 36 shots at the foul stripe, while FMU was 9-of-12. The Patriots attempted only one free throw in the opening 20 minutes.
ASU also converted 19 FMU miscues into 25 points.
The Jaguars closed the first stanza with a 17-2 run (that erased a 22-21 FMU lead) to hold a 38-24 advantage at intermission.
Francis Marion managed to cut the margin under double figures only twice in the second half, the final time at 52-43 following a Dorsey layup with 12:38 remaining. ASU answered with a 9-0 spurt to put the game away. Bowman ignited the run with a monster two-handed, fast-break dunk and concluded it with a tip-in. In between, Madgen scored five points on a three-pointer and a two-point basket.
FMU plays at USC Aiken, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., while ASU entertains Armstrong Atlantic State University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
