Pacers race past FMU Women in Opening Half

AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken received 43 points from its reserve players and the Lady Pacers used an 18-2 run midway through the opening half to claim a 73-44 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Jan. 31) in women’s basketball action.

USCA (13-7, 5-4) avenges a 68-64 loss to the Patriots two weeks ago in Florence.

Freshman forward Yasmean Dixon led Francis Marion (5-15, 2-7) with her second double-double in a week: 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior 6-4 center Shavone Mack added eight points and six rebounds, while junior guard Brittany Young had seven points and six assists.

Kendra Chandler came off the bench to pace the Pacers with 13 points and six rebounds. Four USCA players reached double figures.

After a Young jumper gave FMU a 7-6 lead early in the contest, USCA tallied 18 of the game’s next 20 points to take a 24-9 advantage. The Lady Pacers led 38-15 at intermission as Francis Marion hit only 6-of-23 field goal attempts in the opening stanza, while USCA shot 53.3 percent.

FMU trimmed the margin to 19 points (40-21) early in the second half, and to 18 points (54-36) following a pair of Young free throws with 10:37 remaining. However, USCA closed the game with a 19-8 spurt.

USCA converted 27 Francis Marion miscues into 30 points and the Lady Pacers held a 40-12 advantage in points-in-the-paint.

Francis Marion continues its stretch of three straight road games with a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday at Columbus State University.
