PEMBROKE, N.C. – Natalie Ray came off the UNC Pembroke bench to score 11 points and grab 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Braves to a record-setting 43-34 win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Feb. 7) in Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball action.
The 34 points tied the FMU mark for fewest points in a game, set by the inaugural Patriot women’s basketball team in a 1974 loss to Anderson Junior College. The 77 combined points is a school record surpassing the old mark of 82 set twice during the same 1973-74 campaign.
Freshman forward Yasmean Dixon scored a game-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting and pulled down six rebounds to lead Francis Marion (5-17, 2-9), which drops its fifth straight contest. No other Patriot had more than six points.
UNCP improves to 11-12 overall and 8-4 in the Peach Belt.
FMU hit three of its first four field goal attempts en route to a 6-0 lead. However, the Patriots made only five of their next 20 shots and trailed 21-18 at halftime.
In the second stanza, FMU’s shooting woes continued as the Patriots shot 20 percent (6 of 30) from the floor. Dixon scored on a layup to open the half and bring Francis Marion to within 21-20, but UNCP never trailed during the final 20 minutes.
FMU trailed by only 38-34 with 3:09 left following another Dixon layup, but the Patriots missed their final four shots and committed three turnovers.
Francis Marion plays host to North Georgia College & State University, Saturday at 2 p.m.
