Bishop rebounds and shoots FMU past Chowan 78-72

FLORENCE, S.C. – Senior guard Dominic Bishop scored a career-high 30 points and handed out six assists to lead Francis Marion University to a hard-fought 78-72 non-conference win over Chowan University, Monday night (Feb. 12) in men's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 8-15 by winning for the fifth time in its last nine outings. The Patriots also avenge a 19-point loss (66-47) at Chowan back in January. The Hawks drop to 9-14.

Bishop, who shot only 5-of-17 in Saturday’s loss to North Georgia College & State University, rebounded on Monday by hitting 8-of-19 field goal attempts, including 4-of-7 from three-point range,  and 10-of-14 free throws. He also grabbed four rebounds and recorded three steals, while not committing a turnover in 36 minutes.

FMU senior center Kevin Ashford tallied his second straight double-double with a career-high equaling 13 points and 12 rebounds, while senior forward Raymond Dorsey added 12 points.

Senior 6-6 guard Trayvon Lathan led Chowan with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, while reserve forward Deon Tynes added 15 points and Jaleel Nelson 10.

Francis Marion connected on 55.6 percent of its shots in the opening half en route to a 41-30 lead at intermission. A 17-1 spurt gave FMU a 33-17 margin with five minutes left before halftime.

After Bishop scored to open the second stanza to give FMU a 13-point margin, Chowan began chipping away at the deficit. When the Hawks’ Aaron Scott made one of two free throws with 10:57 left, the score was tied at 53-53. A layup by Tynes with 7:04 on the clock gave Chowan its first lead of the game at 61-60.

A minute later, Tynes tied the score at 64-64 with a basket. Bishop then scored or assisted on FMU’s next 11 points as the Patriots pulled away to a 75-67 lead. Dorsey came away with a key steal in the final minute as Francis Marion was protecting a four-point margin and Bishop sealed the win with two free throws in the final 19 seconds.

FMU committed a season-low 11 turnovers, while forcing 18 Chowan miscues.

The Patriots play at Lander University, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
