FLORENCE, S.C. – Georgia College & State University connected on 18 of 23 field goal attempts in the second half to easily pull away for a 95-64 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) in men’s basketball action.
GCSU (17-8, 7-7) snaps a three-game losing streak, while FMU drops to 8-17 overall and 4-10 despite playing in front of its largest home crowd (1,560) in three seasons.
Senior guard Dominic Bishop again led Francis Marion with 19 points, while 5-7 freshman point guard Cortne’ Baker added 15 points, reserve forward Rodrick Burton 11, and senior center Kevin Ashford 10.
Center Aaron Clark paced the Bobcats with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Graham Martin tallied 15 points, Shejdie Childs and Shaun Keaton 14 each, and Aaron Gibbs 10. Childs also handed out 13 assists.
Francis Marion trailed by only four (39-35) with 2:21 left before halftime, but GCSU closed the stanza with a 9-2 run, including a three-pointer by Keaton at the halftime buzzer. The Bobcats’ halftime margin was 48-37.
GCSU scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half and never looked back. The 78.3 percent shooting exhibition was in stark comparison to FMU’s 32.1 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.
The Bobcats held a 22-9 advantage in points off turnovers and a 44-20 margin in points in the paint.
Francis Marion will celebrate Senior Night on Wednesday when the Patriots entertain UNC Pembroke at 7:30 p.m. GCSU hosts Columbus State University the same evening.
