FLORENCE, S.C. – Senior forward Cassie Miliner tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds and Georgia College & State University survived three potential game-tying shots in the final 21 seconds by Francis Marion University to claim a 54-49 Peach Belt Conference win, Saturday (Feb. 17) in women’s basketball action.
Freshman forward Yasmean Dixon paced Francis Marion (5-20, 2-12) with a career-high 19 points, her seventh double-figure effort in the past eight games. The Patriots have lost their last eight contests.
Following Miliner for the Lady Bobcats (18-7, 9-5) was guard Tiauna Brantley with 11 points.
Francis Marion led 28-24 at intermission, but the Patriots scored only two points over the opening 8:49 of the second stanza. That drought allowed GCSU to take a 36-30 lead.
Sophomore guard Kirby Marsh drew FMU to within 48-47 with one of two free throws at the 2:09 mark. GCSU’s Marquita Driskell and FMU’s Vanessa Goff traded baskets leaving the Lady Bobcats up 50-49 with a minute remaining.
An offensive stick-back by Miliner following a missed GCSU free throw pushed the margin to 52-49. FMU had three three-point attempts to tie the score, but none fell and Ashley Williams sealed the victory with an uncontested layup with three ticks left.
Francis Marion hit only nine of 23 free throw attempts.
FMU plays host to UNC Pembroke on Senior Night, Wednesday at 5:30, while GCSU hosts Columbus State University, also on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
