HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Paced by a team effort that produced five scores between 72 and 77, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga fired the lowest round (294) of the final day to claim the team title at the second-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, Tuesday (Feb. 27).
The 54-hole event was hosted by Francis Marion University at the par 72, 6,752-yard Wexford Plantation course.
UTC’s 897 team score was three strokes better than Marquette University (900) and 10 strokes better than defending tournament champion USC Aiken (907). East Carolina placed fourth (908), followed by Eastern Michigan University (914), Furman University (916), Mercer University (918), Wofford College (920), Francis Marion (923), University of Toledo (925), Northern Illinois University (927), Miami University (Ohio) (941), Davidson College (945), University of Iowa (949), and George Washington University (961).
Marquette’s Mike Van Sickle captured medalist honors as he fired a final-round 1-under-par 71 to finish at 3-under 213. He led by three strokes after Monday’s 36 holes.
Ciaran McAleavey shot a 70 on Tuesday and placed second at 2-over 218. He was followed by Neil O’Briain of Wofford (72-73-75=220), UTC’s Jonathan Hodge (75-72-74=221), and UTC teammate Derek Rende (75-74-73=222). Eastern Michigan’s Graham Hill carded the low round of the tournament with his 68 on Tuesday, and moved into a sixth-place tie with NIU’s Zach Jecklin at 223.
Sophomore Ronan O’Connor led the Francis Marion golfers as he tied for 19th position at 229 after a final-round 75. Freshman Christopher Couch also shot a 75 on Tuesday and tied for 23rd at 230. Andrew Pitcher tied for 38th position (76-84-74=234) along with senior Jacob Tveit (77-78-79=234), while Fredrick Fox tied for 50th (78-83-77=238).
Two Patriots competed as individuals: Jonathan Lavin (77-88-81=246) tied for 66th and Keith Crowley (85-82-80=247) tied for 70th position.
FMU will compete in the 10th-annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by USC Aiken, March 11-13 at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.
