AASU 3, No. 22 Francis Marion 2 (11 Inn.)

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State University plated the winning run off an errant throw by Francis Marion University right fielder Nick Stewart with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to claim a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference victory over the 22nd-ranked Patriots, Saturday afternoon (March 3) at Pirate Field.

The Pirates' (11-3, 2-2) Josh Dallas advanced to second on a single through the left side by senior Marc Noble, then an errant throw by Stewart allowed the winning unearned run to cross the plate.

Francis Marion (11-5, 4-3) scored first in the top of the third inning on an RBI triple by junior Justin Greene and an RBI single by Jared Barkdoll. AASU chipped away at the lead with a run of its own in the bottom of fifth inning with an RBI single from Dallas to trim the Patriot lead to 2-1.

The Pirates tied the game on an RBI single by junior Chris Smith in the bottom of eighth inning to push the game into extra innings.

Junior Nate Herder (2-1) hurled 2.1 innings in relief, giving up five hits, no runs and striking out four to pick up the win for the Pirates.  Senior right-handed Brooks Sinquefield (1-2) threw 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and one run, while striking out one, but was saddled with the hard-luck loss.

Dallas led the Pirates at the plate with a three-hit day, driving in one run and eventually scoring the winning run. Greene and Barkdoll both collected a hit and drove in a run for Francis Marion.

The Pirates and the Patriots return to action on Sunday (March 4) with a noon doubleheader.
