AUGUSTA, GA. - Augusta State University split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with Francis Marion University on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at Jaguar Field. FMU won the first game 3-0 behind the shutout pitching of freshman right-hander Michaela Wolf (9-1), while ASU won the second game 5-0.
Francis Marion is now 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while ASU is 8-7 and 1-3.
In the first game, the Patriots jumped on top in the second inning when Wolf singled to left and advanced to second on an error. She then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Shannan Tyson and scored on an RBI single by Megan Pangburn. FMU scored single runs in the fifth and sixth frames when Kayla Ruede singled in a run and Janine Allen homered.
Wolf tossed a one-hitter for the Patriots, while Amy Dumas (3-4) took the loss for the Jags, striking out 10 and giving up seven hits. Wolf also collected two hits at the plate, while Ashley Roberts had the lone hit for ASU.
The Jaguars captured the game two win by stringing four hits together in the bottom of the second and scoring five runs. ASU laid down three consecutive bunts to score the first run and to load the bases. Center fielder Jesse Sadlowsky led the Jags offensively in game two, hitting 2-for-3. Danielle Metzger, Kayla Hicks and Jessica Matta all were 1-for-3.
Jacklyn Benenhaley (2-0) pitched seven innings for the Jags, shutting out the Patriots on only five hits. Senior righty Jessica Johnson (1-1) took the loss for FMU.
Senior right field Jenna Sexton paced the Patriots in game two with a pair of hits in three at bats.
