FMU softball sweeps Knights, 5-0 and 5-2

FLORENCE, S.C. – Three Francis Marion University pitchers limited St. Andrews Presbyterian College to three hits as the Patriots swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Knights on Tuesday afternoon (March 6). Freshman left-hander Michaela Wolf and sophomore righty Serena Lim combined to no-hit St. Andrews in game one 5-0, while senior right-hander Jessica Johnson tossed a complete-game three-hitter as FMU won game two 5-2.

In the opener, Wolf was 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched five no-hit innings, fanning six, to improve to 12-3. Lim pitched the final two innings. Left fielder Jenna Sexton also had two hits for the Patriots.

St. Andrews junior right-hander Samantha Stewart (1-6) was tagged with the loss in game one, although only one of the five runs she surrendered was earned.

In the second game, Francis Marion scored all five of its runs in the opening three innings. Leadoff batter Shannan Tyson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. Monica Wofford doubled in two runs in the bottom of the first frame to put FMU on top.

Johnson (2-1) struck out 11 and allowed only one hit over the first six innings to earn her 47th career win. St. Andrews outfielder Kailee Munden ruined the shutout with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. Munden had two of the three Knight hits.

Knights’ starter Lauren James (0-6) was the losing pitcher as she allowed all five runs, although only two were earned.

Francis Marion improves to 15-5, while the Knights drop to 2-16. FMU hosts Newberry College for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., and St. Andrews entertains West Virginia Tech on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
