Patriots nip Kutztown and rip Blue Hose at Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman infielder Kat Beauvais hit a 2-run single to give Francis Marion University a 4-3 extra-inning win over Kutztown University, Saturday (March 10) at the Patriot Invitational Tournament at the Freedom Florence Complex. Later in the day, Beauvais hit a 2-run homer and Monica Wofford added a three-run shot as FMU pounded Presbyterian College 14-2.

Francis Marion, now 21-5, runs its winning streak to eight consecutive games. The 28-team tournament will conclude on Sunday with the Patriots facing West Virginia State University at 11 a.m. and Newberry College at 1 p.m.

FMU freshman left-hander Michaela Wolf recorded complete-game efforts in both contests on Saturday to improve to 16-3.

After Kutztown (5-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, FMU catcher Kayla Ruede tied the score with a solo home run, her third of the year, in the top of the second inning. Lindsay Bennett gave the Golden Bears a 2-1 advantage with an RBI single in the fourth inning, but the Patriots tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Ruede scored on a two-out single by Shannan Tyson. Tyson finished the game 2-for-5.

In the top of the eighth inning, Beauvais stroked a one-out single that scored both Wofford and pinch runner Stevie Arrand. Kutztown got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but Wolf retired the final three batters to end the game.

Against Presbyterian, Beauvais’ homer highlighted a five-run third frame. After the Blue Hose scored twice on a 2-run single by Ashley Ford in the bottom of the frame to pull to within 5-2, FMU tallied five runs in the fourth, three coming on Wofford’s blast. The Patriots then scored four more times in the fifth inning.

Wofford was 2-for-3 in the game two as the Patriots benefited from eight walks and three hit batters.

On Friday, FMU defeated Queens University of Charlotte 7-6, with a four-run seventh inning, and beat Mansfield University 15-7.
