Lim limits FMU opponents to three runs as Patriots go 2-0 at Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. – Sophomore right-hander Serena Lim pitched a pair of complete games and picked up a pair of base hits as Francis Marion University completed an unbeaten run through its own Patriot Invitational Tournament with a 4-0 blanking of West Virginia State University and a 6-3 win over Newberry College, Sunday at the Freedom Florence Complex.

Francis Marion has won its last 10 contests, including six at the tournament, to up its record to 23-5. The 28-team tournament concluded on Sunday. FMU returns to Peach Belt Conference play this week as the Patriots entertain USC Upstate for a twinbill on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Lim improves her record to 4-1 on the season. She tossed a two-hitter against West Virginia State, while striking out four and walking no one.

Sophomore catcher Kayla Ruede staked the Patriots to a 1-0 advantage in the second inning with an RBI fielder’s choice grounder. Janine Allen plated Kat Beauvais in the third inning with an RBI single, and Jenna Sexton scored on the same play as the W.V. State outfielder committed an error. The final FMU run came home on a two-out infield error in the fourth frame. The Patriots managed only five hits, but took advantage of four W.V. State errors and two walks.

In the second game, Lim allowed Newberry three runs in the top of the first inning, but limited the Lady Indians to two hits over the final six frames.

Megan Pangburn trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with an RBI single in the second. Lim tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run single in the third and Beauvais followed with an RBI single to put FMU up 4-3.

Allen completed the scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth inning, the senior’s fourth long-ball of the year. Sexton was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored in the second game.

On Saturday, Francis Marion beat Kutztown University 4-3 in eight innings and pounded Presbyterian College 14-2, while on Friday, the Patriots defeated Queens University of Charlotte 7-6 and Mansfield University 15-7.
