SPARTANBURG, S.C.— Senior shortstop Brooke Starnes hit a long home with one out in the top of the sixth inning to give 10th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne College a 1-0 win over 15th-ranked Francis Marion University, Sunday afternoon (March 18) on the final day of the South Carolina Fastpitch Classic hosted by USC Upstate.
Francis Marion finished the three-day event with a 3-1 record and now stands 27-7 on the season. The Patriots will play a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Columbus State University, Friday at 1 p.m.
Francis Marion loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the last inning, but southpaw Casey Hanes (12-3) struck out two Patriot batters to end the game.
Lenoir-Rhyne (25-4) pitchers limited FMU to only three singles.
FMU freshman left-hander Michaela Wolf (19-5) suffered the loss although she allowed only four hits and struck out eight.
