Arrand’s homer gives #23 Patriots softball sweep

FLORENCE, S.C. – Sophomore outfielder Stevie Arrand drilled a two-run, walk-off home run to give 23rd-ranked Francis Marion University a 2-1 win over Mount Olive College, Thursday afternoon (March 29) and a sweep of the non-conference doubleheader. Laura Hauff doubled home two runs and Arrand added an RBI single as FMU held off a late Mount Olive rally to claim a 6-4 victory in game one.

Francis Marion improves to 30-10, the team’s ninth 30-win campaign in the past 11 seasons, while Mount Olive drops to 29-12.

Freshman left-hander Michael Wolf (20-8) got the win in game one, and tossed five shutout innings in game two. Wolf becomes only the second Patriot hurler in 18 seasons to post 20 victories. Sophomore righty Serena Lim (7-1), the third FMU pitcher in game two, was the beneficiary of Arrand’s long ball.

FMU third baseman Shannan Tyson was 4-for-4 in the opener and stole home in the second inning as FMU built an early 6-0 advantage. Patriot junior Monica Wofford had two hits in game one.

Mount Olive took advantage of four FMU errors and RBI singles by Colleen Thomas and Erin Wilson to climb to within 6-4 in the sixth inning. Wilson finished the opener 3-for-4 with a run scored. The Trojans left the tying runs on base in the sixth and stranded one runner in the seventh inning.

Game two was scoreless until the seventh frame. Mount Olive’s Tiffanie Pittman singled, went to second on a passed ball, and scored when Jamie Pruitt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Arrand then answered with her two-run shot in the bottom of the inning, following a groundout and an infield error that put the tying run on base.

FMU managed only four hits in game two, while the Trojans had only three.

Senior right-hander Krystal Bourne (6-1) suffered her first loss of 2007 in game one, while Jenny Jackson (10-4) was the hard-luck loser in game two.

FMU plays a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at UNC Pembroke on April 3 at 2 p.m., while Mount Olive hosts Barton College on the same day at 5 p.m.
