FLORENCE, S.C. – The 17th-ranked Francis Marion University women’s tennis team captured a 9-0 Peach Belt Conference win over UNC Pembroke, Thursday afternoon (April 5), the squad’s third consecutive 9-0 victory.
FMU improves to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the PBC, while UNCP drops to 10-10 and 1-10.
Francis Marion junior Sarka Vitkova won in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) at No. 1 singles, while both Kamini Murugaboopathy and Magda Jezovicova won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
FMU’s Jenny Ludwig rallied to win three consecutive games in her second set with UNCP's Natalie Dies and escape with the straight-set victory at No.2 singles. Their match provided the most exciting action of the day. A back-and-forth tussle throughout, Ludwig won 6-3 in the opening set, but trailed 4-3 in the second set prior to her late rally.
The Patriots dropped only two games in winning the three doubles matches.
Both the FMU men and women will play host to nationally-ranked Georgia College & State University, Friday at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts.
