FLORENCE, SC - Junior forward Berin Boracic scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others to lead Lees-McRae College to an 8-0 win over Francis Marion University, Friday afternoon (Aug. 24) in men’s soccer action.
The match was the season opener for both squads, and the result ruined the head coaching debut of FMU’s Kevin Varnado.
FMU will play host to Belmont Abbey College, Sunday at 2 p.m.
Boracic assisted on a 12-yard shot and goal by Matt Lacey in the 19th minute that gave the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage. Boracic then corralled a loose ball in the box and scored form 11 yards out in the 41st minute to up the margin to 2-0.
Lees-McRae scored three times in the opening 8:36 of the second stanza to take a 5-0 lead. The Bobcats then added three more tallies in the final 16 minutes.
Francis Marion led in corner kicks 7-6, but trailed in shots 21-5. FMU junior goalkeeper Jeremy Crooks recorded six saves, while Lees-McRae keeper Sean Paradise did not face a shot-on-goal.
With the Bobcats leading only 1-0, Paradise turned away FMU’s best scoring opportunity in the 39th minute when he knocked the ball away from Patriot forward Joey Pineo, after Pineo had gotten behind the Bobcat defense and was preparing to shoot from inside of 13 yards.
