ST. PETERSBURG, FL - The Francis Marion University volleyball team opened its 2007 season by splitting two matches on the opening day of the Eckerd College Invitational Tournament on Friday (Aug. 24). The Patriots defeated Davis & Elkins College in three games (30-23, 30-17, 30-27), before losing in three games to Lewis University (17-30, 19-30, 29-31).
The 1-1 Patriots will play the host school, Eckerd, on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then Saint Leo University at 5 p.m.
In the opener, senior Jackie Phiel paced FMU with 11 kills, while junior Jessica Lombardi compiled 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Jess O’Leary handed out 34 assists and freshman libero Karli Koralewski tallied seven digs and five service aces in her first collegiate match.
In the second contest, sophomore Krissy Mordini recorded a team-high 14 kills, while Phiel had eight kills and 13 digs. Junior setter Jenna Kaiser dished out 27 assists, while freshman Kelsie Deaton had 12 digs and three service aces.
After hitting .286 as a team in the first match, FMU was held to a .100 attack percentage against Lewis.
