CHARLOTTE, NC - Freshman forward Juan Rivas scored a pair of second-half goals to give Francis Marion University a 2-0 shutout win at Queens University of Charlotte on Friday night (Aug. 31) in men’s soccer action, handing first-year FMU head coach Kevin Varnado his first coaching win.
FMU improved to 1-2-0, while Queens fell to 1-1-1. Francis Marion will play at Pfeiffer University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Rivas scored off an assist from Joey Pineo in the 61st minute. His second tally, and third in the last two matches, came at the 81:39 mark thanks to a Matt Gourie assist.
FMU goalkeeper Jeremy Crooks posted his second career shutout by recording four saves. Queens outshot the Patriots 12-9, while both teams took six corner kicks.
