ROCK HILL, SC - Freshman midfielder Taylor Jenkins scored off a rebound 31 seconds into the second half and Francis Marion University went on to tie Winthrop University 1-1, Friday night (Aug. 31) in women’s college soccer action.
The match was the season opener for both squads. Francis Marion, which is unbeaten in its last seven matches dating back to last season, will play host to Gardner-Webb University, Sunday at 2 p.m. on the FMU Soccer Field.
Winthrop took a 1-0 advantage on a header by junior forward Erin Foote, who finished a perfect cross from junior forward Chelsea White in the 32nd minute mark.
The Patriots responded with their goal in the first minute of the second half as Jenkins found the net after a great save by junior goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos, who gave the rebound off an Angela Salem shot from inside the six-yard box.
The Lady Eagles had a few good scoring opportunities to take the lead in the second half as senior midfielder Michelle Butler’s shot skipped off the bar in the 55th minute and freshman midfielder Lindsay Taylor nearly beat FMU keeper Jacque Sutphin on a left-foot shot from inside the 18-yard box on the last play of the game.
Poulos, the Big South Preseason Player of the Year, notched four saves, while Sutphin recorded eight saves. Both teams took 18 shots, while FMU led in corner kicks 7-6.
