TALLAHASSEE, FLA - Ninth-ranked Florida State University scored three goals in a 1:31 span midway through the first half and went on to a 10-0 shutout of Francis Marion University, Friday evening (Sept. 7) in women’s college soccer action.
Francis Marion drops to 1-1-1 after its first-ever match with a nationally ranked opponent at the NCAA Division I level. The loss also snapped the Patriots’ eight-match unbeaten streak (7-0-1) that extended back to Oct. 7, 2006. Florida State (2-1-0) wins its home opener before 1,109 fans at the Seminole Soccer Complex, where FSU is unbeaten in its last 21 matches (19-0-2).
FMU will face UNC Wilmington on next Friday as part of the College of Charleston Tournament. FSU plays at 10th-ranked University of Florida on Sunday.
Amanda DaCosta put the Seminoles on the board in the 17th minute with an 18-yard shot. FSU then scored its three quick goals in the 23rd and 24th minutes to lead 4-0. The margin was 5-0 at halftime.
Sanna Talonen and Erika Sutton each tallied two goals for FSU, while leading scorer Mami Yamaguchi added a goal and two assists.
FMU senior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded six saves in 67 minutes, while allowing eight goals. Sophomore Emily Brandenburg made two stops, while allowing two goals in the final 23 minutes.
Florida State outshot the Patriots 30-2, and led 5-0 in corner kicks. The final margin of defeat equaled the Patriot school record, while the two shots also equaled an all-time low.
Goalkeepers Erin McNulty and Kate Milstead combined on the shutout.
