Depleted Patriots fall twice at AASU Tournament

SAVANNAH, GA - Francis Marion University was swept in a pair of matches at the AASU/Chatham Orthopaedic Volleyball Classic, Friday (Sept. 7) in Savannah, Ga. FMU fell to undefeated Florida Tech 30-21, 30-25, 30-25 and then, playing without the services of two injured starters, lost a 30-18, 30-19, 30-23 decision to the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.

On Saturday, Francis Marion (4-7) will face Catawba College at 10 a.m. and Northwood University at 2 p.m.

In the opener against Florida Tech (9-0), junior Jessica Lombardi paced the Patriots with 16 kills and six digs. Senior Jackie Phiel, last week’s Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, played with an injured arm and recorded 23 digs, but had only one attack attempt. Junior setter Jenna Kaiser dished out 27 assists and served three aces, but injured her back which prevented her from playing in the nightcap. Freshman Kelsie Deaton added 18 digs.

The second match was the program’s first-ever match against a team from another country. Lombardi recorded 16 kills and two service aces, while sophomore Krissy Mordini knocked down 13 kills. Sophomore setter Jess O’Leary handed out 30 assists in Kaiser’s absence, while Phiel had 12 digs and Deaton 12 digs and two service aces. Senior hitter Michelle Settergren also missed the match against Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
