WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate University rallied for three unanswered goals in the second half to take a 3-1 victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Sept. 12) in men’s college soccer action at the WU Soccer Complex. Three different players scored goals for the host Bulldogs.
With the victory, the 25th-ranked Bulldogs improve to 6-0 overall on the season. Francis Marion falls to 1-5 overall. Wingate travels to Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) College on Friday afternoon for a 5 p.m. match. FMU visits Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
Wingate outshot Francis Marion 16-8, including 10-3 advantage in the second half. The Patriots found the back of the nets first, as senior forward Jonathan Bartomioli scored an unassisted goal from 25 yards. The tally was Bartomioli’s first goal of the 2007 season.
Bulldog head coach Gary Hamill gave his troops a good halftime speech, as the hosts played inspired ball in the second half. Freshman midfielder Luke Mulholland tied the match at 1-1 in the 64th minute. Mulholland was assisted by defender Kerrin Sheldon.
Wingate freshman midfielder Jamie McKenna tallied the match-winner at the 79:30 mark on a free ball from a Bulldog corner kick. Freshman defender Jack Vundum contributed the assist.
Bulldog sophomore forward Junior Nyemb scored on a breakaway in the 86th minute to complete the scoring. Vundum and freshman forward Andru Harris assisted Nyemb on his fifth goal of the season.
Bulldog freshman goalkeeper Joey Calandra improved his collegiate record to 6-0 overall with the victory. He allowed the one goal and recorded four saves. Patriot junior netminder Nick Krywyj took the loss. He also played 90 minutes, notching five saves.
