CONWAY, S.C. – Sophomore Kirby Stenard scored a goal in each half as Francis Marion University blanked Coastal Carolina University 4-0, Friday night (Sept. 21) in women’s college soccer action.

Francis Marion, which hosts Presbyterian College on Sunday at 2 p.m., improves to 2-3-1, while CCU drops to 3-4-1.

FMU got on the board in the 13th minute as Stenard took an Ashley Fortune pass and shot from five yards out for a 1-0 advantage. In the 32nd minute, freshman Nina Connell collected a CCU header, dribbled, and shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the season.

Coastal outshot the Patriots 8-7 in the first half and had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage, but could not dent the scoreboard.

Fortune put in her first goal of the year, and 32nd of her career, at 67:46 with an assist to freshman Margaret Fanning. Fortune would then assist with a corner kick at 83:18 that Stenard headed into the net for her second goal of the game, sixth of the year, and 20th of her young career.

Both teams had 13 shots for the game with Coastal coming away with a 5-4 corner-kick advantage, but FMU downed the Chanticleers for the second straight meeting.

Senior Patriot goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin registered her 10th career shutout by making six saves, while CCU freshman Amy Haggard had three saves. With 234 career saves in three seasons at FMU, Sutphin is nine shy of the school record of 243 set by Amanda Liles (1999-2002).

Junior Blair Monroe and senior Ashleigh Gunning had four shots apiece for Coastal, while Angela Salem had four shots for FMU.
