Salem’s tap-in lifts Patriots past Blue Hose

FLORENCE, S.C. – Sophomore Angela Salem corralled a loose ball in the box and tapped it into the goal and Francis Marion University rode that early score to a 1-0 victory over Presbyterian College, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23) in women’s college soccer action.

Francis Marion evens its mark at 3-3-1 with its second straight win, while Presbyterian falls to 3-3-0.

The Patriots also improve their all-time home record to 84-16-5 with a sixth consecutive win in Florence.   FMU is unbeaten at home in its last 10 matches (7-0-3 mark) dating back to a 3-1 loss to UNC Asheville on Oct. 18, 2005.

Salem’s unassisted goal came in the seventh minute.  The sequence began with a corner kick by FMU senior Ashley Fortune.  The ball was knocked around on the ground by several players in the box before Salem booted the ball over the goal line for her third score of the season.

The Patriots had three other scores negated by two offside infractions and one foul by a forward on the Presbyterian goalkeeper.

FMU outshot the Blue Hose 15-8 and both sides took three corner kicks.

Presbyterian’s best scoring opportunity came in the 22nd minute when an apparent  cross by Tricia Bryan drifted toward the FMU goal and Patriot goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin had to leap and tip the ball over the crossbar for a Blue Hose corner kick.

Sutphin finished with six saves, bringing her to within three of the Patriot career record of 243 held by Amanda Liles (1999-2002).  Sutphin also registered her 11th career shutout.  She has not allowed a goal in her last 237:17 covering three matches.

Presbyterian goalkeeper Erin Sinkuler recorded eight saves, including two difficult stops in the 57th and 87th minutes.

FMU plays at UNCA on Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Presbyterian plays host to Liberty University next Sunday at 1 p.m.
