Sutphin shuts down UNC Asheville 2-0

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Senior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded four saves and posted her third consecutive shutout as she enjoyed a record-setting afternoon and Francis Marion University blanked UNC Asheville 2-0, Wednesday (Sept. 26) in women’s college soccer action.

Francis Marion improves to 4-3-1 as it scored two goals in a span of 7:59.  UNCA drops to 2-7-0.

UNCA outshot the Patriots 15-13, but Sutphin only had to make four saves.   However, those four stops gave Sutphin a record-setting 244 for her career, surpassing the former Patriot record of 243 held by Amanda Liles (1999-2002).  It is Sutphin’s 12th career shutout and she extended her current scoreless streak to 327:17 covering four matches.

FMU senior Ashley Fortune would put the Patriots in front for good when she hit a blast from 20 yards out at the 42:15 mark.  It was her 33rd career score.

Francis Marion added its second tally right after halftime to build the lead to 2-0.  Sophomore Kirby Stenard picked up her team-leading seventh goal of the season on a double assist from Nina Connell and Fortune at 50:14.  Stenard is ranked 25th in NCAA Division I in goals per game.

The Bulldogs (2-7-0) just missed scoring in the first minute of the match and simply could not get the ball into the back of net.  Joy Haynes was sent in on a breakaway in that first minute, but her shot was wide.

FMU plays at East Carolina University on Saturday at 3 p.m., while UNCA plays host to Coastal Carolina University in its Big South Conference opener, Oct. 5 at noon.
