NEWBERRY, S.C. - Debola Ogunseye scored four goals, including his third consecutive match-winning score, and had one assist as Newberry College came back to defeat Francis Marion University 5-4, Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 26) in NCAA Division II men's soccer action.
Francis Marion falls to 3-7-0, while Newberry (7-3-0) remains unbeaten in five home matches this year. It is only the fifth time in team history, FMU has scored as many as four goals and lost, and the first time since a 6-4 overtime loss to Presbyterian College in 1990.
Ogunseye started the scoring in the 26th minute when he received a pass from Shane Abbott in the box and shot the ball past FMU goalie Nick Krywyj into the lower right side of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Francis Marion would jump ahead with two goals late in the first half. The first was scored in the 34th minute by freshman Ivan Juric who scored from the right side of the goal after receiving a pass from Chris Adrian. Adrian followed his assist with a goal of his own in the 44th minute when he connected on a header off a corner kick by Jonathan Bartomioli. The goal made the score 2-1 in the Patriots' favor heading into halftime.
Ogunseye tied the match at 2-2 early in the second half (49th minute) when Will Koch found the Nigerian native on the right side of the box and the junior dribbled around a diving Krywyj and deposited the ball in the net for his second goal of the match.
Newberry reclaimed the lead in the 60th minute when Kwame Gyamfi scored his ninth goal of the season. Edsel Rudder sent a cross in front of the goal which Ogunseye forwarded on to Gyamfi for the easy finish. Ten minutes later, Ogunseye found himself in the scoring column once again as he and Marvin Torvic connected on a two-on-two breakaway. Torvic passed the ball ahead to Ogunseye who scored his third goal of the game for his second hat trick of the year.
Down 4-2, Francis Marion rallied in the 83rd minute when freshman Juan Rivas blocked a goal kick by Newberry goalkeeper Will Dieterich and scored in the resulting open net. The goal, Rivas’ team-leading eighth of the season, made the score 4-3 with just over seven minutes remaining.
The Indians added a much needed insurance goal in the 89th minute when Ogunseye scored his fourth and final goal of the match on a breakaway. That score would prove to be the game-winner as the Patriots' Juric scored his second goal of the match just 28 seconds later off a give-and-go with Rivas. However, FMU would not be able to get off another shot for a potential tying goal in the final 1:07.
Newberry outshot Francis Marion 32-13, including a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. Krywyi recorded 11 saves, one shy of his career high.
Francis Marion will play host to Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke, next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
