Freshmen lead 20th-ranked Patriots to 11-0 blanking of Senators

FLORENCE, SC – Freshmen Preston Shuey and Vince Farfaglia combined to drive in five runs as 20th-ranked Francis Marion University blanked Davis & Elkins College 11-0, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17) in college baseball action.

 

Francis Marion rapped out 14 hits en route to its ninth straight win.  The Patriots continue to improve upon their record-best start at 11-1.  Davis & Elkins drops to 0-3 after its season-opening series.

 

Junior right-hander David Walters (4-0) was the first of five Patriot hurlers who limited the Senators to six singles.  Walters fanned six in his five-inning stint.

 

The Patriots scored three times in both the first and second innings, and then tallied four runs in the third frame to take a commanding 10-0 advantage.

 

Shuey had two hits, including a double, drove in three runs and scored twice.  Farfaglia was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

 

FMU senior center fielder Justin Greene was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while senior shortstop Greg Phelps singled in his final at bat to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

 

Senior left fielder Adam Thompson paced the Senators with three hits on Sunday.  Starter Brent Windon (0-1) allowed 10 runs (seven earned) in three innings to take the loss.

 

FMU will host Barton College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
