#7 Patriots sink #8 Pirates in second frame, go on to 11-2 win

FLORENCE, SC – Senior David Bounds and junior Jared Barkdoll laced two-run doubles in a six-run second inning that seventh-ranked Francis Marion University used to take an 11-2 win over eighth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University, Friday afternoon (Feb. 29) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

Francis Marion (15-3) remains the only unbeaten team in PBC play at 4-0, while the Pirates drop to 8-2 and 2-2. The two squads complete the early-season PBC series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission is free for the Homecoming twinbill.

Junior right-hander David Walters (6-0) recorded FMU’s first complete game of the season as he limited the Pirates to five hits. He struck out 11 and walked two.

Barkdoll went 2-for-5 and added a run-scoring single to his 2-run double. Patriot center fielder Justin Greene was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while senior shortstop Greg Phelps went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Phelps extended his hitting streak to 26 games, second-longest in team history behind a 30-game streak by Michael Bartell during the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

FMU’s six-run second inning was the squad’s biggest inning of the year. Bounds and Barkdoll both went the other way (to right field) for their 2-run hits. Up 7-1, Francis Marion added four runs in the seventh without the benefit of a hit. A walk, three hit batters, a wild pitch, and a two-out fielding error accounted for the four tallies.

AASU third baseman Kenny Cail doubled off the left field fence to open the seventh inning and later scored on a double play grounder by Nick Pyron. The Pirates’ other run came in the ninth, and was unearned, when Josh Wilson reached on an infield error and later crossed home plate on an RBI ground-out by Derrek Miller.

AASU lefty Cody Walden (2-1) allowed seven runs on nine hits and was the losing pitcher.
