Hypke leads Patriots to 13-1 win at GSW

AMERICUS, GA -- Senior second baseman Ryan Hypke recorded five hits and drove in four runs to lead Francis Marion University to a rain-delayed 13-1 win over Georgia Southwestern State University, Saturday evening (April 12) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action at Hurricane Field.

The two squads were suppose to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m., but rains forced a change to a single game at 6 p.m.

The visiting Patriots (29-16, 13-9) scored four in the third, fourth and seventh innings en route to the victory. They added a single run in the sixth. GSW batters were held in check until the ninth when the 'Canes pushed across their lone run of the game on a Daniel Stokes single.

FMU senior right-hander David Walters (8-4) earned the complete-game win as he scattered seven hits while striking out seven.  Andrew Wiggum (1-6) took the loss going 3.1 innings while allowing six runs on nine hits. He struck out three.

Hypke's hit total was one shy of the school record.  Freshman first baseman Preston Shuey added four hits, with a double, and three RBI, while third baseman Keon Graves drove in three runs. Justin Greene and Jared Barkdoll each had two hits.

Stokes went 2-for-4 for the 'Canes while knocking in the lone run. Noble Coley and Daniel Lynn also had two hits apiece for GSW (14-26, 5-14).
