AMERICUS, GA - Senior Greg Phelps and junior Jared Barkdoll each rapped out four hits and Francis Marion University used a 13-run fifth inning to take a 19-10 win over Georgia Southwestern State University and earn a split of their Sunday afternoon Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. The Hurricanes scored seven runs in the first two frames of game one en route to an 11-4 victory.
Francis Marion ups its overall record to 30-17, the fifth time in head coach Art Inabinet’s eight seasons the Patriots have won 30 games, and its PBC mark to 14-10. FMU is third in the conference standings, while Georgia Southwestern drops to 15-27 and 6-15.
With the score tied at 3-3, Francis Marion sent 18 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth frame, scoring 13 runs on nine hits, three walks, and four Hurricane errors. Barkdoll drove in three of the runs with two singles, while Keon Graves had a pair of run-scoring singles.
FMU right-hander Zane Petty (4-0) was the beneficiary of the outburst, while senior southpaw Zach Farry pitched the final four innings to earn his 12th save, improving upon his own school record.
Phelps and Barkdoll were both 4-for-6, while Graves was 3-for-5. Freshman first baseman Preston Shuey was 2-for-6, including his sixth home run, while scoring three times and driving in three runs. Barkdoll also homered. The team’s 19 runs were a season high.
Hurricane starter Jody Sellars (1-2) was tagged with the loss.
In the opener, FMU took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first on an RBI-single by Shuey. Georgia Southwestern responded with three runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the second frame. FMU hurlers contributed four walks, two hit batters, and a throwing error during the two-inning explosion.
At the plate, Shuey led FMU with three hits, while freshman Vince Farfaglia and senior Justin Greene each had two hits including a home run.
Patriot sophomore righty Erik Sommerville (5-3) was the losing pitcher, while R.M. Cozza (4-3) pearned the complete-game win.
FMU won Saturday’s game, which was delayed five hours by rain, 13-1 behind five hits and four RBIs from senior second baseman Ryan Hypke and four hits and three RBIs from Shuey. Junior righty David Walters (8-4) pitched a complete-game seven-hitter.
Francis Marion plays its final PBC series next weekend at Augusta State University.
