FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior point guard Brittany Young has been named the Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball “Player of the Week” for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3, while the Patriot team moved up two positions to 18th in the most recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, released Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 5).
Young, a 5-6 native of Moncks Corner, S.C., averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game in two PBC games last week as FMU took over first place. In a 113-103 win at Lander, she scored a season-high 22 points and became the 24th Patriot to surpass 1000 career points. She later tallied 16 points and seven steals in a come-from-behind win over North Georgia College & State University.
She connected on 36 percent of her field goal attempts and was 16-of-19 from the free throw line.
Young is now 10th in the PBC in three categories: scoring (13.3 ppg), assists (3.4 apg), and steals (2.3 spg). She has helped lead the Patriots to a 16-2 record and first place in the conference with a 9-2 mark.
Francis Marion plays three road games in the next five days: at USC Aiken on Wednesday, at Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday, and at Columbus State University on Sunday.
Young is a product of Berkeley High School.
Francis Marion entered the Top 25 poll for the first time in seven seasons three weeks ago at the No. 24 spot, but dropped out of the rankings the following week before returning at No. 22 last week. FMU is the lone Peach Belt Conference school in this week’s poll, while undefeated Delta State University (19-0) continues to occupy the No. 1 position.
