Patriot Runners earn PBC Honors

FLORENCE, SC - Francis Marion University sophomore cross country runners Steven Holmes and Kelly May have been named the Peach Belt Conference male and female Runners of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 8.

The runners helped the two Patriot squads to second-place finishes at the sixth-annual Blue Hose Invitational Meet, Oct. 6 in Clinton, S.C.

May, a 5-7 native of Bowling Green, Ohio, finished second at the Blue Hose Invitational. She registered a career-best time of 19:42.40 over the 5,000-meter course – the sixth fastest time in the program’s history. May has been FMU’s top finisher in all five meets this fall, including a pair of Top 10 showings.

Last year, May earned All-Conference and team MVP honors as a freshman.

Holmes, a 5-9 native of Hodges, S.C., placed 11th at the Blue Hose Invitational with a career-best time of 27:24.57 over the 8,000-meter course. It marked the second straight meet he has established a new career-best time. He has been FMU’s top finisher in all five meets this fall.

May is a product of Bowling Green High School, while Holmes is a graduate of Greenwood High School.

Both FMU squads will compete in the Peach Belt Conference championships, Oct. 21 in Columbus, Ga., and the NCAA Division II South Region meet, Nov. 4 in Memphis, Tenn.
