Cashiers, N.C. – Battling blustery conditions that included high temperatures in the mid-40s with wind gusts upwards of 20 mph, Francis Marion University fired a final-round 301 team score to finish seventh at the WCU Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, presented by Macon Bank, and played on the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley course.
Western Carolina University junior Andres Cuenca, who led from start to finish, claimed medalist honors while leading the host Catamounts (565) to the team title.
Vanderbilt University (582), which entered the final day just five strokes in arrears of WCU in second, slipped further back to finish 17 strokes back. Radford University (587) finished third, followed by High Point University (594), Furman University (595), Gardner-Webb University (596), Francis Marion (597), and Charleston Southern University (598). The field included 16 squads.
Peter McGibney led FMU on the final day with a one-over-par 72 to finish tied for 11th spot at 145. Christopher Couch shot a 75 on Tuesday to tie for 25th at 148, as did Ronan O'Connor, who fired a final-round 76.
Other Patriots golfers were Andrew Pitcher (78-78=156), who tied for 57th, and Keith Crowley (81-79=160), who tied for 72nd position.
The tournament concludes the fall portion of the Patriots’ schedule.
