Francis Marion golfers finish 10th at Furman Intercollegiate Tournament
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore Christopher Couch shot a final-round, even-par 72 on Sunday to help rally Francis Marion University to a 10th-place finish at the 39th-annual Furman University Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.

Jonathan Hodge (69-73-71=213) carded a final-round 71 to claim individual medalist honors and help the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (874) edge Clemson University (877) by three strokes for the team title.

Couch (75-78-72=225) and Andrew Pitcher (76-75-74=225) finished tied for 31st place, while other Patriot golfers included Peter McGibney (70-79-77=226) tied for 42nd, Ronan O'Connor (76-79-74=229) tied for 64th, and Keith Crowley (81-78-72=231) tied for 79th.

Hodge, tied for second entering the final round, finished one stroke ahead of Vanderbilt University’s Jon Curran (71-72-71=214) and two strokes in front of third place Roberto Diaz (72-74-69=215) of USC Aiken.  The Mocs, who captured their first Furman Intercollegiate title, led at the conclusion of all three rounds at the par-72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.

The University of South Carolina (882) finished third, while Western Carolina University (888) and Vanderbilt (888) rounded out the top five.  Virginia Tech (890) was sixth, followed by USCA (891), Furman (894) and Ohio State University (894), and Francis Marion (899).  The field included 24 teams.

Francis Marion was tied for seventh after the opening round, but faltered in the weather-delayed second round.  The Patriots rallied to shoot the third-lowest team score (292) on Sunday.

The start of the final round was delayed until 11:45 a.m. after second round play had to be completed on Sunday morning due to Saturday’s play being suspended by darkness.

FMU will compete in East Carolina University’s Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate Tournament, April 5-6, in Greenville, N.C.
