Patriots overcome conditions to place 5th at Penn State tourney

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Amid poor weather conditions, Francis Marion University compiled a 314 team score and moved up two positions to finish fifth after the final round of the 32nd-annual Rutherford Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by Penn State University.

The 54-hole event was played on the par 71, 7,202-yard Penn State Blue Course.

The host school shot the low round (306) of the rainy final round to capture the team title with a final score of 878. Miami (Ohio) University finished second at 894, followed by the University of Hartford (902), the University of Akron (907), Francis Marion (910), Bowling Green State University (914), Ball State University (916), St. Bonaventure University (918), Ohio University (920), the University of Richmond (924), Binghamton University (933), and Wright State University (934).

Junior Andrew Pitcher shot a 79 over the final 18 holes to finish tied for 10th at 73-73-79=225 and lead the Patriot golfers.  Sophomore Christopher Couch had FMU’s low round on the final day as his 5-over 76 lifted him into a tie for 18th position (72-80-76=228). Junior Peter McGibney tied for 26th (72-78-80=230), while junior Ronan O’Connor tied for 34th (73-80-79=232), and junior Keith Crowley tied for 47th (79-75-81=235).

Penn State’s Robert Rohanna became the first player to ever win the tournament in consecutive years as he fired a final-round 76 to finish at 3-over 216.

Francis Marion concludes its first season as a full-fledged NCAA Division I member with a 100-66 record.
