Paladins rally for golf win at Raines Development Group Intercollegiate Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. – Led by sub-par, final-round scores from Jonathan Bowden (70), Chris Gilliland (70), and Austin Reeves (71), Furman University rallied from 13 strokes back over the final 18 holes to capture the team championship at the 23rd-annual Raines Development Group Intercollegiate Tournament. Francis Marion University, the host school and leader after the first 18 holes, finished fifth.

FINAL RESULTS

The 54-hole event was played on the par 72, 7,101-yard Country Club of South Carolina course.

Troy University’s Michael McGrady fired a final-round even-par 72 to earn medalist honors. He was also the first day leader after shooting 71 and 69 on Monday. He finished at four-under-par 212, three strokes ahead of Bowden, who finished at 215.

Matt Cook of Western Carolina University shot a final-round 73 to finish third (75-68-73=216), while Roberto Diaz of USC Aiken (75-73-69=217) and Billy Shida of Georgia College & State University (70-74-73=217) tied for fourth.

FMU juniors Peter McGibney and Andrew Pitcher were among a trio tied for sixth place. Pitcher carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish at 218, while McGibney shot a final-round 76.

Furman recorded the lowest team score (285) on Tuesday by eight strokes to finish one stroke ahead of Western Carolina (877 to 878). East Carolina University and Troy University tied for third at 880, followed by Francis Marion (887), GC&SU (904), Presbyterian College (907) and Jacksonville University (907), Samford University (909), Elon University (910), Winthrop University (919) and Charleston Southern University (919), Appalachian State University (924) and USCA (924), and Wofford College (935).

Jacksonville was the defending tournament champion.

Other Francis Marion golfers include Christopher Couch (76-70-76=222) tied for 18th position, Ronan O’Connor (75-77-78=230) tied for 44th, and Jonathan Lavin (75-78-78=231) tied for 46th place.

Two Patriots competed as individuals: senior Jacob Tveit (69-85-83=237) tied for 60th and Keith Crowley (82-79-79=240) tied for 71st.

Francis Marion will compete in the University of Rhode Island’s Adams Cup of Newport Tournament, Sept. 25-26, in Middletown, Rhode Island.
